Often times we say that we “forgive but don’t forget”.
But that’s not always the case.
All too often we won’t forgive.
Or
We will forgive them, because it isn’t really their fault.
But we don’t forgive God.
Or
We don’t forgive ourselves.
See, its can be easy to understand that God forgives us, its his nature… but often times we don’t feel we deserve the forgiveness, so we don’t forgive ourselves, punishing ourselves for something God already put behind us.
But there is a catch there. Often times we bury that pain so deep, that we are numb to it, we just move on with it weighing us down, not realizing how much it hurts our Father, or the friend closest to us that feels our pain.
Sometimes its old friendships, relationships, old idols.
Did you know that they actually have a title for people that put school above everything else? Academic Idolatry. And sometimes that desperate need for success and control stems from a much larger issue.
Actions you took towards others or yourself that you can’t let go of.
I have very recently come to understand that, while hard, you have to forgive yourself.
Big or small, God has already put it behind him, and holding on to it is not only masochistic, but a sin against the very Father who already paid the debt, why continue to put him through it?
Granted, it isn’t a one time deal, forgiveness is something you have to do daily, just like picking up the cross and following him, it’s a journey.
But I have come to realize that true joy, that inner happiness, can only be felt when you let go.
Forgive yourself .
Just Do It.
