God is Love

God is Love.

Wow. That’s a loaded statement.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

This would mean that “God is patient, God is kind. God does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud.  He does not dishonor others, he is not self-seeking, he is not easily angered, he keeps no record of wrongs. God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. God never fails.

Those of you that know me understand my obsession with agape, I love love, all types of love from Philadelphia to eros, but above all, agape.

And between you and me, I have struggled for a long time to see the God of the Old Testament as the same God as the one in the New. Don’t get me wrong, I know in my head he is the same, but how could such a wrathful and angry God also be the one who died for us?

Then God did something beautiful, while walking on the beach at Campus by the Sea.

Jeremiah 30:11 “I am with you and will save you.’ Declares the Lord. “Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you. I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only with justice. I will not let you go entirely unpunished.”

Ah, now that sounds like the God I know. One who will protect his children, so often it seems as if God is like the father, yelling at his child for crossing the street before looking. Only really concerned with their safety.

Has God ever told you to stop before?

Told you no?

Ever seemed unjust?

Maybe it is because he loves you, because unlike us, he can see the car speeding down the street.

Psalm 91: 14-16, one of my favorites, says:

“Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him;
   I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
   I will be with him in trouble,
   I will deliver him and honor him.
 With long life I will satisfy him
   and show him my salvation.”
